Defend Democratic Rights
Rally against the Terror Laws

12.30 PM, Wednesday 17 April
Melbourne Convention Centre
cnr Spencer & Flinders sts

stay on after the rally to attend the Senate public inquiry into the
terror laws. The hearings continue 9-5 on Wednesday, April 18 as well.

The Federal Government is using the September 11 attacks to gain
unprecedented powers to crack down on any dissent. Arab and Muslim
communities and people of colour will be the first in the firing line,
unions, social movements and community organisations could be next.

The terror laws, if not blocked by the ALP in the Senate will

* allow the Attorney General to ban any organisation he says is "likely
to endanger the security and integrity of the Commonwealth (Australia)
or another country". If you're a member or supporter you can get 25
years in jail;

* allow ASIO, Australia's secret police, to detain people incommunicado
without a right to a lawyer or contact with the outside world. People
who exercise their right to silence face 5 years jail;

* allow the government to label some union activity, civil disobedience
and other activism as terrorist.

It is time to stand up for democratic rights won through hundreds of
years of ordinary people's struggle.
