As the people of East Timor celebrate their hard-won
independence, the human rights atrocities occurring in
Aceh continue on a daily basis.

Currently, there are more than 21,000 troops in Aceh,
backing up thousands of police. The total number is
almost the equivalent of an entire regional military
command.

At least 1,700 people were killed in Aceh last year.

Leading independence activist, Erwanto, will offer a
challenging first hand perspective on
self-determination, militarisation and human rights
abuses in Aceh at a public meeting in Melbourne.

THURSDAY 23 MAY @ 6.30PM - ANNEX, TRADES HALL

Erwanto, International Officer for the Acehnese
Popular Democratic Resistance Front (FPDRA), will also
discuss Exxon-Mobil's tacit support for the brutal
repression being carried out in Aceh by the Indonesian
military.

Jason McLeod, of Peace Brigades International, will
discuss Australia's re-newed military links with
Indonesia.

The FPDRA is an open civilian movement that supports
peaceful methods for achieving change.
