on women's oppression, feminism and beating the backlash.
The title of the seminar is "Who's Afraid of Feminism?". It is being
held on Sunday, 15 September starting at 11 am (goes til 6.30 pm) at the
Sydney Resistance Centre, 23 Abercrombie St, Chippendale.

AGENDA:
*11am-12noon Plenary
The Dispossession of Women:how it began and why it persists.
The pervasive gender inequality of modern society is not "natural".
This plenary explores the origins of women's oppression and why it
exists today.
12noon-1.45pm Workshops
* Religion as oppression (covering the 5 major religions)
Explores the role of religion in women's oppression.
* Women's "double shift": economic independence & the family
Examines how women's unpaid domestic responsibilities enable their
superexploitation and why economic independence is a pre-requisite for
women to escape domestic slavery.
* Women taking the streets: A brief history of feminism's 1st & 2nd waves.
The struggle for women's liberation is not new. This workshop will
outline the historical importance of the first and second wave of
feminism, looking at the different types of feminism that have developed
in the last 100years.
* Women & the Russian Revolution
At the beginning of last century, thousands of young women joined the
Bolsheviks to fight against Tsarist autocracy and capitalism. This
workshop explores the role of women and the Bolsheviks in revolutionary
Russian and the re-shackling of women through Stalinism.

2.30pm-3.30pm Plenary
"The neo-liberal offensive & the backlash: where class & sex intersect"
Looks at why the women's liberation movement has been a particular
target of the neo-liberal offensive by global capitalism, its damaging
effects on women and how to fight it.
3.30pm-5pm Workshops:
* Racism, sexism & class oppression: how they intersect in women's
struggle for liberation
Examines how the effects of racism on women of colour under capitalism
shapes their experience of sexism and their involvement in the women's
liberation movement.
* Dollars, desire & death: the commodification of women's bodies
Looks at how the commodification of women's bodies via commerical
exploitation (sexist advertising), pornography and prostitution
reinforces the notion women are not full human beings.
* The revolution within the revolution: Has Cuba liberated women?
Explores the relevance of the Cuban revolution for women, the
advancement of women under the revolution and the limitiations to
liberating women before communism is established.
* The rise & role of the "men's movement"
Are men "oppressed"? Has feminism emasculated men? This workshop
explores the rise of the "men's movement", its different forms and the
role it plays in perpetuating women's oppression.
* Women's right to choose: the offensive against reproductive freedom
Looks at abortion, IVF and the ideological and "moral" offensive against
the right of women to control their bodies and their reproductive choices.
5pm-6.30pm Plenary
"Women, feminism and revolution"
Does Marxism contradict feminism? What type of movement will win women's
liberation? What alliances should feminists make? What is feminist
leadership? What role for "automous organising" within the women's
liberation movement?
