Defend the CFMEU
Rally: Thursday 24 October at 8:45 am
Trades Hall, 54 Victoria Street, Carlton South
March to the Magistrates Court at 9 am
The attack on CFMEU is a threat to all - Their rights are our rights
The Victorian Trades Hall Council urge all unions to rally on 24 October
against the Cole Royal Commission's attack on the Construction Forestry
Mining & Energy Union (CFMEU).
Martin Kingham, CFMEU Secretary, has been charged under the Royal
Commission Act (1902) for refusing to endanger the livelihoods of his
members. He was charged for failing to produce a document relating to
the funding and organisation of union training and will appear before
the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 24 October.
Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary Leigh Hubbard has called on all
affiliated unions to attend the rally in defence of Martin Kingham who
is now personally under attack from the Royal Commission for the 'crime'
of acting to protect the interests and privacy of his members.
Leigh Hubbard said:
"We urge all union members to take a stand in support of basic trade
union rights."
"The Howard Government has targeted the CFMEU because they represent the
strength of militant unionism."
"Why does the Government seem intent on crushing the strongest sections
of the union movement? For the simple reason that strong, militant trade
unionism provides the best protection and conditions for ordinary =
working people."
