The housing department office at the Fitzroy housing commission flats on Gertrude St, Fitzroy have effectively banned Socialist Party material from residents in the high rise flats.
Unlike private houses and low-rise housing commission flats which have post box that can be accessed from the street, residents of the high rise flats have post office-style post boxes. A key is required to enter a room behind the boxes to place election material. For the past few years, SP and other political parties have gained access after negotiating with the local department office chief. Not this time. We have been told that we must post our material (at a cost of at least $2000) to high rise residents. This means that the most disadvantaged residents in the electorate will only have access to Liberal and Labor material who can afford the postage bill. Residents of high rise blocks will be the only voters denied access to minor party and independent literature. The local housing department chief is acting like an unelected political gatekeeper for residents. Say no to this anti-democratic measure. Protest outside the Housing Dept office at the Gertrude St, Fitzroy Housing Commission flats, this Thursday, November 21st, 1pm.
