Big rally for socialism
On November 30, Socialist Alliance mobilised over 200 people in our
campaign against war and racism. And in a great indication of the
potential of the Alliance, 75 of those who handed out at the booths were
not aligned to any affiliate. A considerable number of other people made
contributions to the campaign but were unable to poll on the day also.
The vote for Socialist Alliance varied from 1.1% in Melbourne, where the
Green sweep took its greatest toll, to over 2.6% for Justine Kamprad in
Footscray, where the Green vote was around a quarter of inner city
proportions. Candidates also received 1.7% in Brunswick and Northcote
and over 2.5% in Lara.
Overall, Socialist Alliance letterboxed around 100,000 leaflets, and
placed a how-to-vote which advertised the December 1 anti-war rally in
the hands of some tens of thousands of Victorian voters. We capped off
the weekend with a large presence at the anti-war rally. Socialist
Alliance banners and placards were prominent in all television and
newspaper reports on the rally.
The final Socialist Alliance public event for the year (unless the US
unleashes its promised war against the people of Iraq this month) will
be a public forum on 'Fighting War and Racism: How do we build the
socialist movement today?' which will be held at the Function Room at
RMIT (off Swanston ST, enter near the Kaleide Theatre) at 6.30pm on
Wednesday December 11. Everyone is welcome, and there will be drinks on
sale, so come along and have your say on this vital discussion for the
future development of Socialist Alliance.
If war starts, rally at the State Library from 5pm on the day, for a
march and rally. Socialist Alliance will have a strong presence.
