MELBOURNE

The West Papua Conference

Tuesday 25th (6.00-8.00 p.m.) and 26th February 2003 (all day 9.00-5.00)
Storey Hall, 344 Swanston Street, Melbourne

West Papuan Futures

This May is the 40th anniversary of the hand-over of West Papua to
Indonesia. Then, as now, West Papuans want to determine their future: in
government, in politics and economy. At least one-hundred-thousand West
Papuans have died pursuing that future.

Join us as people concerned about human rights, as academics,
politicians and Papuan guests converge on Melbournes Storey Hall in the
last week of February to share perspectives about the past, present and
future of West Papua.

Transnationals, the military and Indonesia have profited from the mining
of West Papuas wealth of natural resources in the past. What will
happen to West Papuan resources into the future? What are Indonesias
present plans for the territory?

While their brothers and sisters and dying, West Papuans are calling for
a zone of peace. Is this achievable? How can West Papua be demilitarised
in order to stop the torture and killing of the West Papuan people?

West Papua is on Australias doorstep, yet receives little attention
here in Australia. What can and should be done by Australia and this
region about West Papua?

Speakers include: Denise Leith, Bob Brown, Nic Mclellan, Chris Richards,
Kel Dummett, Jason McLeod, and speakers from around the region.

No registration fee.

More information: Ring Cathy Williams Ph: 03 9925 2995.
The conference is organised by New Internationalist magazine and RMIT's
Globalism Institute.
