Humphrey McQueen–Overland Lecture
6:30pm, Wednesday 26 March, Trades Hall Ballroom
$6/10 | includes copy of latest Overland | refreshments available

Join us for the first Overland lecture of 2003, in which renowned
historian and social critic HUMPRHEY McQUEEN examines the 'ratcheting
up' of the pace of life within modern society.

His lecture, 'MAKING CAPITAL TICK', follows on from his ground-breaking
and very successful study of Coca-Cola, an archetypal corporation of
contemporary capitalism. McQueen moves into a consideration of the
demand for longer and more intense working hours facing most people
today. He mounts the provocative argument that this intensification of
labour is an inevitable and necessary feature of a society in which
different 'capitals' must compete against each other in order to
survive.

Intriguing personal and cultural implications follow from this analysis.

The lecture will continue Overland’s interrogation of contemporary
Australia, and will launch of Overland 170 -- the first issue produced
by new editors Nathan Hollier and Katherine Wilson.
