YANAGAI! YANAGAI!
10 - 27 SEPTEMBER 2003
THE MERLYN THEATRE, CUB MALTHOUSE
STURT STREET, SOUTH MELBOURNE
We are in a mythical landscape on the banks of a mighty river.
The Yorta Yorta know him as 'Dhungula'. The white fellas call it 'The
Murray'.
Melbourne Workers Theatre, in collaboration with Playbox, is thrilled to
present a theatrical celebration of Yorta Yorta stories and song, the
world premiere of Andrea James' play YANAGAI! YANAGAI! from Wednesday 10
September, 2003.
Music, puppetry and touches of magic realism weave the dreaming and the
memories of colonial past with the present. In a courtroom in Melbourne,
members of the Yorta Yorta nation struggle to prove a claim to their
land. While on the banks of the Murray, sacred trees, familiar fishing
holes, cheeky dingoes, min-min lights and the spirits of those who went
before weave a deep connection to the land.
YANAGAI! YANAGAI! brings together a clan of storytellers and musician
Lou Bennett (Tiddas) to celebrate their survival as an Aboriginal nation
in a captivating tale of powerful and generous vision.
Working closely with her father's people, writer/director Andrea James'
(Magpie, Crowfire) YANAGAI! YANAGAI! was commissioned and developed by
Melbourne Workers Theatre and features David Adamson, Bryan Andy, Lou
Bennett, Tony Briggs and Lisa Maza.
"It is universally agreed that Andrea James' play was one of the hits of
the 2002 National Playwrights' Conference" Campion Decent, Chair (ANPC)
