War in the classroom!

John Howard claims recent versions of Australian history serve a
partisan political cause. So what does that mean for the history taught
to our kids?

In a presentation at the New International Bookshop in Trades Hall, Anna
Clark -- co-author with Stuart Macintyre of the best-selling "History
Wars" -- analyses the classroom as a major front in the ongoing battle
over Australian culture.

Paul Keating described "The History Wars" as 'a sort of code stone to
help people understand the motivations of players in today's
contemporary debate. It sheds light on the political battle which is
carried on in the pubs and on the footpaths about who we are and what
has become of us.' Yet -- as Anna Clark makes clear -- the battle in the
schools as just as important since 'it is through the image of the
child, a symbol of the future, that the struggle over the past is
increasingly conducted.'

Her talk is the next in the Wednesday evening series of presentations
held at the New International Bookshop in Trades Hall (enter from
Victoria Street).
There is no need to book and entry is $6 for waged and $2 for unwaged.
