CONVERSATIONS ON PEACE AND NONVIOLENCE Wednesday 19 November 2003 6.30pm Marcus Atkinson, International Peace Pilgrimage With International guest walkers Topic: On the eve of their departure for Roxby Downs and Japan, veteran walkers from the International Peace Pilgrimage will talk about past experiences on Peace Walks in Bosnia, Serbia, USA and Africa,, creative nonviolence from around the world and the power of peace walks as a way of creating dialogue, building hope, solidarity and resistance to the global nuclear industry. An amazing and inspiring night of grassroots nonviolence. Wednesday 10th December 2003 Time: 6.30pm to around 8.30pm International Human Rights Day Jacques Boulet, Borderlands Topic: On the 2003 International Human Rights Day, renown community activist Jacques Boulet will lead a discussion on the origins of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, contemporary interpretations and controversies, uses and misuses. Is there a 'bias towards western values' and therefore the need to have a more careful approach to them we refer to them? A lively and fascinating discussion for all those interested in human rights, social justice and how they are applied. Wednesday 21st January 2004 Time: 6.30pm to around 8.30pm Jason Macleod, Free West Papua Collective Topic: Nonviolent activist Jason Macleod, will discuss the long and little known history of popular nonviolent struggle in West Papua and outline the growing solidarity movement's strategies for nonviolent resistance around the world. The land of West Papua was integrated in to the Republic of Indonesia against the wishes of the Papuan peoples. Terrible human rights abuses and massive environmental destruction has been taking place in beautiful and resource rich territory since the early 1960s. Wednesday 18th February 2004 Time: 6.30pm to around 8.30pm Mark Sawula, Nonviolent Peaceforce, Australia Topic: A powerful and inspiring presentation about the Nonviolent Peaceforce, an new international organisation building a large-scale 'peace army' of trained, paid civilians from every continent to intervene in conflict situations. Using proven nonviolent intervention techniques, Peaceforce teams help local peacemakers carry out and expand their work to transform violent conflicts. The Peaceforce is currently conducting a three-year pilot project in Sri Lanka and working with local groups in Burma, Israel/Palestine, and the Korean Peninsula.
