The y-axis is normally left open and the bearing follows the work. I'm assuming you understand that you cut your reeds with the same taper angle set as your piece. Depending on the size of the reeds or flute you use, sometimes the bearing will fall into the last cut. This is where it's to your advantage to use a template and remove the bearing. On a straight piece it's as simple as locking the y-axis. On a tapered piece you can use a straight edge as the template. On a complex contoured piece you hopefully used a template first to cut the piece and then just follow it up with the side cutting bit. That way all the flutes or reeds will be identical.
Your asking some good questions Brandon, please keep it up. There's a lot of new guys on this list that need to know what you are asking. -Tim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brandon Khoury" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 9:34 PM Subject: Cutting Reeds on a Tapered Spindle I have looked through legacy's page on setting up to cut reeds using a side cutting bit. But, their description appears to be based on a uniform spindle, not a tapered one. I realize you set the Z-axis to the depth of your centers, and to set the Y-axis you rest the bearing along the side of the spindle. This makes sense to me if your stock is uniform in thickness. But, when you reset your depth to match your centers, will the bearing be able to contact the stock to allow you to follow the taper?
