Hello Mac
I made my own head stock after replacing the plastic bushings 3 time, My
bushings wore out mainly because that they were not made to handle very heavy
idioms, I was turning logs at the time. (10.5" oak and maple logs 56" long.)
Here is the link of what I did and how.
http://ornamentalmills.com/turningaround/HeadStochBearings.htm
Now since I made this, I've found some other bearings that just might fit into
my original headstock. A more simple thrust bearing with a needle bearing might
work?
I have been thinking of looking into this topic more as of late. I have a
company Detroit ball bearing Co.,(http://www.detroitballbearings.com/) That is
pretty close to my house, I was thinking of bringing the original head stock to
them and seeing what that might have? I will keep you all informed on How it
turns out.
But if you don't want to wait for me, them Please feel free to do your own
research. I wish you Luck.

((There has to be more than one way to skin this cat. Lets see what we as a
collictive can come up with?))
Have a good night.
C.A.G.

  Bill (and others),

I, too, am interested in getting the "plans" (and sources for the parts) so
that I can remove my Delrin/nylon(?) Headstock Bearing arrangement and replace
it with a Headstock arrangement that has a ball or roller bearing setup. Which
is it guys?

Has any Group member done that swap out and "documented" what they did?
(photographs and write-up, to include where you got the "off-the-shelf"
components and whether or not you had to have pieces fabricated?)

Thanks in advance for sharing if you do. Once again, this is one reason
folks join/participate in the Group - to learn how to improve their Mill.

  Mac
