If you look at a map of Michigan - it is split into two good size pieces of land - both being peninsulas. They refer to the northern piece, that wraps around much of the northern edge of Wisconsin, the UP / Upper Peninsula. It is kind of Michigan's "Outback" - but it isn't barren like your's. It is full of vegetation and considered remote living - very sparsely populated. As far as I know there are no cities of any size in the UP. Most of Michigan's population lives in the lower 25% of the "Lower Peninsula" (Weather is a tad bit better there.). Most of the population centers in Michigan owe their existence to the founders of our automobile industry. Many (most?) of them surrounding Detroit. Sorry for the long answer to your very short question.
