The O-ring solely for the purpose of holding the pieces together. It doesn't 
protrude outside of the chucks. When using, I only lost a couple out of 
hundreds. Some were lost to over tightening and the grain split. However it 
might also have been the wood.  Hard to say for sure.PVC is a very grippy 
plastic compared to other polymers. That is why I chose it. I thought of steel 
and aluminium but I decided I wanted to use a sacrificial type of material. Of 
course it's really nothing to a carbide bit to eat those up!Great question and
