Tim,

You probably did not see what I initially sent to Patrick.
The first thing I suggested (After the "humorous" recommendations.) was to try turning the shaft.

"With the router unplugged - try turning the shaft by hand.  Having a large bit in the collet makes turning it easier.
If it turns easily - the problem will most likely be with the "electronics" parts - the speed control, armature, field, etc.  If it is hard to turn (or essentially won't turn) - the problem is most likely one or more bearings failing/failed.  If it is difficult to turn the shaft - one other thing to check:  Remove the brushes - and try turning the shaft.  Doing that eliminates the brushes as possibly contributing to the issue."

I agree with you - in today's "disposable" economy - we'll be VERY lucky to find repair parts for our malfunctioning tool.  And if we do, it may not be economically wise to order them - vs just buying another router.

As regards replacing the dead router - here is what I suggested (In case Patrick either:
1. Didn't want to buy new, or
2. Given the current "virus"/pandemic situation, didn't feel comfortable spending money on a "new" one.):

Check your local CraigsList - you can often find a great router at a great price there.
Going the CL route vs eBay: with CL, you should be able to plug it in and see/listen to it run.

For most things "electrical" that I seek to buy, unless "new", I much prefer CraigsList.
With CL, you can hold it and "test drive" the item.  Too much trouble doing something like that on eBay.

Who mentioned turning the shaft (spindle) backwards?  I did not see that one.  In fact, as I stated in the below email where I mentioned you and Joe B., I never saw anyone's reply to Patrick where they addressed "troubleshooting".  The two I saw recommended the Triton router line as a brand for him to check out.

Have a Safe & Healthy weekend.
Mac

I’m no help on this one.  I was going to say it’s time for a new router due to lack of replacement parts, the cost exceeded the value of the router and second hand sales on ebay where not that good of a deal. My only other thought that did not get asked is this, does the spindle turn by hand? If so he’s still out of luck, otherwise, it would be a bearing issue.  With the mention of the spindle turning backwards was a real “Huh?” moment. I’d pay extra for that option! AC motors are not easy to change direction 😊.

That’s my 1 cent worth

Hi Patrick,

Just a quick note - to inquire as to whether or not you received my reply about a week ago to this posting.

In it I gave you several "troubleshooting" suggestions - that have worked for me in the past.

I also commented regarding suitable "replacement" routers.

Just curious - because I have seen no postings by other Group members to your troubleshooting "question".

I figured you would get some excellent tips from either Tim Krause or Joe Biuno.  Let's all pray that Joe B. (NY Joe) is not laid up in the hospital with the Wuhan/ChiCom Virus!  (Let us hear from you, Joe.)

I did see a couple that commented on Triton routers.  I know Bill loves them.  I would expect nothing less - since they are an Australian company.

I do not own one - but hear nothing but Great comments about the Triton product line.

Let us know what the problem was with your router - and how you "fixed" it.  That may prove to be helpful to other Group members sometime down the road.

Thanks.

Stay Healthy and be Safe.

Mac

Blew it out with air compressor. Tried to start. Still buzzing and at first started to turn backwards for a second before turning slower in the right direction.
