I don't know.

I do remember that when we last had a BIG "Woodworking Show" here - Woodpeckers
was demoing theirs and there was one being demonstrated by another company. I
don't now who that was.

Have a Fabulous Friday.

Our wood working group Central Minnesota WoodWorkers have one. I'd have to look
to see which brand but its big. Does Tru Track make one?

Michael,

Thanks.
Your analysis of the total cost of ownership for a slab mill are spot on.
When it comes to when I think I want to flatten a slab - those points you
mentioned are the ones I have come to be using in my weighing what to do.
Thanks again for pointing them out. Have yet to "pull the trigger" on one.

Does anyone else in our LOM Group own or have access to a Slab Flattening Mill?

You are VERY FORTUNATE to have those resources so close/convenient to you.
Count yourself VERY BLESSED!

Mac,The response was to the Crafted Elements mill posted by Craig.
I farm my slabs out to be flattened and sanded as I noted for $1 sq ft.
The Woodpeckers slab flattener I believe is the best but at $1500 total cost
its too expensive not including the cost of the router, bits and dust
collection, electricity, not to mention the dedicated space it requires.

Hello Michael and Curtis (and all the rest of The LOM Group),

I changed the SUBJ line - so further discussions re: Slab Flattening can be
found via search.

Thank you both for the informative input.

Michael, are some of your comments regarding the flattening "kit" from Craft
Elements?
Sounds like from your experience the round rails flex. Did I understand that
correctly?
The only slab flattening mill I am somewhat familiar with is the one made by
Woodpeckers Tools. They do not use round rails - rather somewhat of a hybrid.

Would you mind sharing some photos of your setup? (Is it from Craft Elements or
did you assemble yours from components you ordered from the internet - like
Curtis, Bill, and Tim Z have done?)

Thanks again for participating in our discussions. Your comments/input are
what keep us going.

Have been following this “slab mill” for some time. Most all the
components can be bought on Amazon for 1/3, the round router rails flex and
the listed size is too small for my slabs I mill myself 32” x 102”,
to accommodate that size the price doubles from the base package and he’s
always out of them.
For anything up to 24” wide I have helical head planer for that and used
a flattening sled to take out the twists.

Also have a saw mill 30 minutes away with a Wood-Mizer combo flattening mill
and sander who charges me $1 sg ft to flatten and sand the slabs that includes
both sides.

The Crafted Elements Router Sled (Wood Slab Flattening Mill) is perfect for
small wood shops and garage woodworking warriors that have limited space. If
you don't have the space or money to buy a large CNC machine ($10K+) or
industrial planer ($70K+) then a router based slab levelling jig is a great
solution.
Our router sled is built with industrial grade 20mm components commonly used in
CNC machines, large 3D printers and industrial automation. We precision cut and
machine 1/2" thick acrylic components for the cross rail brackets and router
mount to create a durable, cost effective solution that is going to save you
time, money and boost shop efficiency.
Save shop space with the easy to attach and detach linear rails. Once the
initial assembly is completed, the router carriage (sub-assembly) and rails can
be setup and ready to go on your existing flat and straight workbench within 2
minutes.
The Crafted Elements Router Sled jig comes with everything you need except the
router, slab flattening bit, plywood rail risers and workbench. Use any
compatible full sized router with a range of commonly available spoil board
(slab flattening) bits. The router base plate features pre-drilled holes for
most commonly used routers, making assembly that much quicker. We also offer a
blank "drill it yourself" base plate if you have a router that isn't in our
compatibility list.
The router sled is available in lengths of 4', 6', 8' (2 sets of 4' rails) and
10' (4'+6' rails) with cross bar widths of 40", 48" or 60". An optional dust
collection shroud and 2.5" boot
(https://craftedelements.com/collections/router-sled-wood-slab-levelling/products/dust-collection-boot-shroud-for-router-sled)
is available to help catch some of the dust created by slab milling.
The size of the Crafted Elements router sled represents the approximate
footprint of the sled components when assembled and reflects the workbench area
required to mount it. The slab flattening area for each size router sled when
using a 2.5" diameter slab flattening bit (like the SpeTool CA-IP-D1/2)* is as
follows:
