As a *general* rule with ANY software update that changes the data structure, the programmers typically make a way to either read or convert data made in an earlier version. (Note that MS Word reads all it's old versions) Most of the time a window will pop up telling you the file will need to be converted and asking for permission. You can then save the file with a different name, leaving you the old file and the converted one. That choice only happens when you try to open an old version file or restore an old version backup. Just remember that Legacy remembers the last file used and so the conversion option may appear for that file the first time the new program is started.

As far as I know backup files themselves are not changed when you restore from them. So even if you restore from an old backup, it will read it and convert the resulting information but the backup file itself is not altered. You will get a version 7 backup file when you create the next backup, and as long as you give it a different name the v. 6 file will remain.

Thanks for your reply Gary.

My concern when making a backup was that V7 would be able to get to them and
change them.

Are you telling me that the backups will not be affected after 7 is added ?

You should routinely (after any data entry or changes) be making backups of
your files anyway, so the answer to that is yes. For purposes of the
upgrade, I would save the backup files to a different folder on the same
computer (not really necessary but can't hurt). There is no reason to burn
to a CD, email them to someone else, etc. (You *should* do at least
occasional off-site backups for your normal ones however)

As to the gedcoms, assuming the information included in those files was
imported into a Legacy file, or they were created FROM your Legacy data,
there is really no need to specifically back them up. The Legacy
installation itself is not going to change or move the existing gedcoms in
any way.

If you installed Legacy 6 in the default location then you can install
Legacy 7 over the top.

I am about to install Legacy 7.

Should I make backups of all my files or gedcoms ?

Do I do these on the computer or send them to a disk and if so how ?

I am afraid I am feeling very apprehensive about the whole deal ?

Any help and support would be appreciated and thank you.

I think I should go for a walk first while I await some help.

Regards from Valerie in sunny Sydney.
