Ron, Thank you for your interest in these two things that come and go. I have been backing up to a flash drive then restoring it on a Acer laptop running Vista. I will take your advice and back up on the Dell running Vista also.
At Options>Customise>General I have it set to Open last used family automatically. Sometimes Legacy does and sometimes it open to RIN #1. On another subject after reading your submissions about OpenOffice I started using it yesterday. I needed to prepare minutes for a corporation's annual shareholder's and annual director's meeting, also the waiver and such. OpenOffice is quite a bit different from Office 2000 that I have been using. I find OpenOffice, so far, very easy to figure out. Thanks for mentioning it as I will be using it in connection with Legacy. Regarding your start up problem. Have you in Options>Customise>General set the start up family to whichever is your preference? Note this can revert to default on resets and reinstallation. I have now got into the habit of checking all my settings even after an update.
