Hi Jane,

Glad I could help :-)
Hopefully this will explain my method (and terminology) a bit more:

I keep one family file (aka database, .fdb)
In this file I have my main "Family Tree" with all confirmed family members
and the probable related (as noted using the Title Prefix: probable wife of
John etc) connected to one another forming my family tree...

And in the SAME family file (aka database, .fdb)...
I have several smaller "Island Trees" NOT connected to my main "Family
Tree". These contain either people/families which I have researched and
found NOT to be part of my family line (noted using the Title Prefix) OR
people/families which I suspect are related to my family somewhere/somehow,
but I just don't know how yet.

The multiple "Island Trees" might be only 1 person or an entire family
spanning several generations, depending on the research I've accomplished
and what info the source records provide.

Each of these "Island Trees" and the people within them are sourced as
completely as if they were part of my "Family Tree", in hopes it will help
determine if they are in fact a member of my family and where they should be
placed the hierarchy (or not, depending on the info).
If I find proof they _are_ related to my family it is easy to link them to
the appropriate person in my "Family Tree" (all source documentation will
follow).
If they are NOT part of my family I leave them in the family file/database
.fdb as an "Island Tree" (i.e. Title Prefix: NOT my family line, First Name:
Edward, Last Name: Powers).

Hope I didn't confuse the issue even more :-)

<snip>Thank you for a fine (and very clear) explanation of your methods.  I
certainly like your idea of using the Title Prefix, and will use it.  It
solves a dilemma I have experienced for some time, and seems exactly right.
I do have a question about what you say about adding "people (who may or may
not be connected to your tree (I'm assuming what you call "tree" is what
Legacy calls "family file" and I think of as "data base") Do you have a
separate tree for each person, or do you have one tree that is for all such
people?</snip>
