As far as I know the best clue that it is on the way out is when/if you hear
clicking (faint sound - almost more a feel that the head has misaligned).
Sometimes, it just plain won't start up when plugged in and that's that.



The moral of the story is that you never want to have only one backup of
really valuable data.

Which raises a question from me please,

is there any way you can tell if your external hard drive is on the way out?

I use mine once a week (usually) and just overwrite each time, but I do
worry that it might not be working!
