I think what the OP is saying is that there are one or more babies that died
early in their infancies prior to the parents deciding upon a given name. It
seemed to be a common practice amongst the American pioneers that sometimes
children were not immediately named until days or even weeks later, especially
if the baby was born with a serious medical ailment or condition. I have seen
many gravestones marked only as "Infant Daughter of ...". These children all
had the family surname but there just was no given name.

So yes, they could have been ancestors but they just lack any given name. So
the question I believe is just how does one enter a given name in Legacy? You
probably have several methods of accomplishing this so use whatever one you
feel comfortable with. One example would be to use a given name of "Unnamed" or
even "Unnamed Son" (but the gender is already indicated elsewhere in Legacy).
Another method is to give a name of "Infant". Generally speaking it would be a
good idea to enter a brief General Note that the baby died early before a given
name was chosen by the parents, or something to that effect. The idea is to
convey the information to future readers of your database that you did not fail
to ascertain the child's name but are remaking that no name was ever given.

Continuing the discussion.....I've often wondered why these families back then
took so long to decide upon a given name whereas today the babies are often
named long before birth (perhaps as early as a short while after conception).
But in some readings regarding old American customs, I found out that many
parents named their children to honor their own parentage or other close
relatives. Sometimes the new parents were waiting for the permission and
blessing of the honored relative that might live in the next county over or
even in the next state over.

(PS - My mother did not name me until 6 weeks after birth. She said they just
couldn't decide.)
