Denise, No - the scanners are set up on all the floors and they are truly state of the art! Just bring your flash drive or an external hard drive with you. You are able to adjust the film and make notations right on your copy. They have folks who will show you how to use the scanners and there is a handy "cheat sheet" for you to use. It takes a few attempts the first time but after that it is quick and easy. So scanning gets you great copies (which you can enlarge or crop when you get home) and you are being green - not to mention it helps with less luggage weight! You are also in luck because they were switching out the monitors while I was there and now each computer has a (I think) 21 inch monitor which makes it easy to work with whatever you are researching and your own program (word, excel whatever). Be sure to check out their calendar of classes (they are usually up on their website 2 months in advance) because I took the Scandinavian research classes which were incredibly helpful and had great handouts - another free service. Finally if you have a good digital camera keep in mind that you could also take photos of various items (books - there is also a scanner for books and journals).
I really took advantage of planning by looking up items in the family history online catalog and then adding that to my Legacy to do list. Be sure to put film numbers at the start of the research task and/or dates so that your items will be in order. It make it quick and useful for finding the information, knowing why I wanted to look at it and giving me room to write down my results and make a note of the scan number for my future use. I'll be going there in late April for the National Genealogical Society annual conference, and will be spending many an hour there doing much needed research! Haven't been there in nearly 8 years, so I suspect much has changed there, as far as the technology goes. Thanks for your input and I wholeheartedly agree!
