I found a post that referred to Geoff's comments I was trying to find. It was
in a post by Gail Rich Nestor on 17 Sep 2008 to the "old"
[email protected]. So it was a special web export he was
talking about. Pity it didn't happen.

"I really think the sourcewriter is going to work out well and I'm so glad that
Geoff and the programmers are working on the export issue. Geoff, I truly
believe that this program could also win over many in the professional
genealogy community if/when we can get the export working smoothly. That would
be a great product endorsement! I can just see the Eastman BLOG write-up now...

Ward, see below for what I wrote to Millennia about last year, and the response
from Geoff. I didn't receive any other communication. I unsubscribed from the
email list for several months, so probably missed your posts. I have only a few
sources done with Source Writer and I think I will redo them without.

Jennifer,
Dave had worked on this for citations being published to the web. I'll try to
find out from him what the status is.

Subject: Making the source writer sources GEDCOM compliant

I can't find the email from Geoff some time after Source Writer became
available that said the team was working on making the sources thus created
export to GEDCOM properly. I haven't heard anything since, and would like
to know if this has been forgotten or abandoned as "Too Hard".

My main avenue of publishing my Legacy files is on the Internet using TNG
(The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) software. I long ago stopped
using the Source Writer, more's the pity, because of the way sources
appeared in a GEDCOM and thus transferred to my website

Jennifer,

I am curious about when/where you heard that 'Legacy folk were going to see
if they could get source writer sources gedcom compliant'.

We have had discussions on this list about the problem. There is my
long-winded post on June 25 (or 26?) entitled 'Incomplete Export of Source
Details', and a thread with no title on July 2. Then a rehash on August
23-25 entitled 'combining/replacing sources' and 'changed to Gedcom
history/future' where the ownership of GEDCOM was discussed. Someone said
'don't hold your breath' regarding the likelihood of changes to the
standard.

The main problem is that the Evidence Explained style produced by
SourceWriter templates intersperses fields from the master and detail
source. The GEDCOM standard can only deal with a basic source where all the
detail fields are concatenated together into one field. Also, in a Legacy
export, certain generated titles such as "p." for a page number are missing.
This last problem might be fixable in Legacy, but it would be nice to know
whether the folks at Millennia (and other software providers) are at all
campaigning for enhancements to the standard.

  Ward

Is there any way around this problem? It has been there a long time and I
remember Legacy folk were going to see if they could get source writer
sources gedcom compliant I guess it was too hard. There must be Legacy
users out there who also publish on a TNG site. What looks wonderful as the
output for Legacy reports looks like gobbledegook once it has gone through
gedcom. Below is an example first one Legacy, second one what ends up on
my site if I use the Source Writer.
