Ron, I have found the problem, I think. One is allowed to select "plain text" from a composed email, but not from a "reply". So if I reply to something on the list, it is going to be in RTF. Apparently it is a quirk (or one might say a shaft) from Google mail.
Not even sure I can do it in compose instead of reply.
