Sylvia,

My best advice is not to use it for English locations; in general it does
not work for locations anywhere in the British Isles. As myself and others
have said many times on this list the four field covention is an American
convention, designed for the U.S.A. and you have hit the problem which
occurs when one tries to fit a square peg in a round hole.

I would suggest that you use a good gazetter, Google Maps, Google Earth or
Bing (Multimap) Maps to obtain the co-ordinates, if that is what you are
after. Modern maps will not cater for London, Middlesex, England since
London is no longer part of that county.

Ron Ferguson.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Geo Mapping & UK (London/Middlesex) maps

I have a couple of problems with the Geo mapping. It works great for the
USA but not so good for UK records (and I do have both files), especially
the old London and Middlesex areas which don't necessarily come under London
and Middlesex anymore. Some of the mapping (Geo coding) just makes no
sense, as in Southwark, Surrey turning up in the north of England. Another
one has Bethnal Green, London turning up in Surrey. Clicking the "resolve"
just moves me to another problem area. (Sometimes it is close enough, as in
lost in London, by unclicking the Ver. and then using the "don't auto
geo-code" and then clicking Geo coding through virtual earth I can put my
red pin in the correct place. If I click on the "Edit Location", the
address is in the first line and I click on the atlas at the end of the
line, and that takes me to Geo Location Database (Core+ top line, and Core
next line). To add confusion, in the City, County, State/Province/Country
line "London" is under State/Province with a US flag - I'm not sure how to
control this part of it. Very long story short....is there some very, very,
very simple, kindergarten type instructions for all this? US maps are fine,
it's when I try to access the UK maps. I have many, many addresses
(transferred from Paf5 to Legacy). By the way, I really like this feature
(if I can ever get it to work right). Also, anyone English on the list can
help me in how I might deal with the London/Middlesex area. Very many
thanks anyone patient enough. Sylvia
