Stan,

Check that under Customise>Options>Data Format and make sure that you have
"just leave blank" for Word for Blank Records.

Now that is what you should do, but as I've pointed out to Legacy many times
there is a bug and it does not work. It is a pain in the neck and also
affects webpages, so all you can do for reports is to have 3 runs through a
word processor to get rid of all of them, Use search and replace in your WP
to delete " and unknown", then "unknown and  " and then ""unknown" do not
use quotes but please note the spaces. Similarly use an html editor for
webpages.

In my view this is an important bug, which ruins reports and webpages, or
causes quite a bit of extra work. Quite unsatisfactory.

Unlinking will not work as you will lose your descendants.
