One other difference between Legacy and RootsMagic that is important for me is that Legacy has far more fields that you can search and replace. With RootsMagic you have to find each instance and manually replace.

RootsMagic Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2010 09:46:38 -0400 Dolly, I have been a Legacy user since version 4 and a RootsMagic 4 user as well. Both programs have their advantages and faults. Here are what I see as advantages: Legacy 1) much more flexible report generation, both in format and content 2) the Research Guidance capability 3) the ability to copy and paste events/facts RootsMagic 4 1) RootsMagic-To-Go, the ability to take the program and all your data on a flash drive anywhere you go, and run it on a computer that allows programs to be run from flash drives 2) the ability to import Legacy files directly; I've done this a couple of times and it seems to work well 3) a more flexible sourcing capability - you can modify standard source templates to satisfy lumping/splitting needs That said, here are a couple of faults for each: Legacy 1) not being able to import RootsMagic 4 files directly (that way I could use the best of both more easily) 2) a slightly less easy-to-use user interface, e.g., having to leave the screen you're working on to do other things. RootsMagic 4 1) the inability to copy and paste facts/events; RM4 has a feature to share facts/events that is pretty neat - the problem is it's a RM-unique capability that doesn't translate to GEDCOM files 2) I've had problems with the GEDCOM files RM produces - I have to edit them before I import into Legacy. These are just a few things I've found. I'm sure there may be ways around some of the faults I've listed, but they aren't intuitively obvious, at least to me. -Steve On Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 12:33 PM, Dee Ziegler <[email protected]> wrote: > > Comments from researchers who have actually used _both_ Legacy and > RootsMagic are  valuable to me.
