I'm not sure just how pertinent this is to Legacy's links to FamilySearch or to
the LegacyFS Group, but many of us are probably now aware that the LDS church
has now begun to pull many census images and other image documents off the
servers that were called www.pilot.familysearch.org and are in the process of
migrating them over to new servers at www.fsbeta.familysearch.org.

This means at least two things that I can think of:
  1. Anyone who created Master Sources in Legacy referencing the URL of any
images from the "pilot" servers, have or will have dead links.
  2. The days of viewing census images for free from the LDS church are almost
over. Well, actually they'll still be "free" but it will cost you some time and
effort.

As mentioned previously on this group, the new FamilySearch beta servers where
the images are now at are up and running and open the LDS church members and
anyone from the public. But there is a catch. In order to view any image, you
have to be a "premiere member". In order to be a premiere member, you have to
be a member of the church, or you can index records to accumulate a certain
number of points. The indexing of records (typing in names, dates, etc) is done
from images that you download from them. I don't want to go into more detail on
this as it is not germane to Legacy but certainly can affect many Legacy users
who want to view census images. Full info at
http://indexing.fsbeta.familysearch.org/

One interesting thing: I already have indexed more than enough names and
records from FamilySearch so I can view images from their new server as a
premiere member. When I try this through the Legacy icon link, I'm logging in
with my usual premiere member name but the page then goes dead. Not sure if the
Legacy program link is an old one or if the problem still lies in the fact that
these new FamilySearch servers are BETA where there are still a multitude of
problems to be sorted out. It's all being worked on every day.
