Thanks Jenny, I have it figured out now. What happened was that I found a daughter for this person and entered her. Then on looking at this person (James T.), I noticed that he'd died at the age of 14 so I unlinked the daughter from him. Turned out that the so-called daughter belonged to James P. instead.
But on clicking the marriage area in Family view, it showed "Unknown" as a wife. Once I deleted Ms. Unknown, then "Never married and had no children" appeared in the Marriage area. Many thanks for jogging my gray cells to discover this, especially before I emerged red-faced from reporting a bug.
