That is not precisely what happens although it MAY seem that way.
Once you re-link one photo to the "Murphy John" folder that folder is
added to the folder list recognized by the Legacy database.

If the O.P. had a generically named file such as graduation.jpg in the
"Murphy" folder and moved it to the "Murphy John" folder along with
several others it would probably follow the first file linked to the
correct sub-directory BUT if a file graduation.jpg existed in another
folder such as "Jones Mary" it would most likely show Mary's
graduation picture instead of John's because the "Jones Mary"
sub-folder was added to Legacy before the "Murphy John" folder.
