I've finally decided to change all my census source links from Details
(Citations) to Sources and wish I had done this from the beginning. I had
everyone linked to the source, i.e., 1850 US Federal Census, then cited each
individual beneath that for specific pages of the census then include the
text and attach the image. Now that I'm going through and creating a new
source for each Schedule, which may include several families that I need to
link to, it's easier to see who is attached to that record since there is no
way in Legacy to do this for Details linked to that source. It just shows
everyone for that year of the census.

My next project is for the many newspaper obituaries that are linked to
hundreds of people. I have the source set up as the newspaper name the
Detail will include the obit text and an image if available. This Detail is
then linked to the family mentioned in it as well as the deceased. Is it
better to create a new source for each person with the newspaper name in the
source title such as, Washington Post, John Doe, obituary date, etc. then
link everyone to it that is mentioned in the obit? While doing this for the
census records, I generally leave the Detail page empty unless I have to add
a comment to it.

My reasoning for doing this is occasionally when I find a typo or need to
change something using my old way (Details linked to one Source), I have to
go through hundreds of persons to find who is linked to what Detail. Since
Legacy doesn't let you globally change all the Details for the persons using
that one Detail, and Sources does, this seems to be the way to go. I know
very little about tagging, but there is still too much manual work involved
with finding all the persons linked to one Detail unless someone knows of an
easier way.

I had gotten used to another genealogy program where their source-citations
could be accessed in one place and you could see who was linked to it making
this easier. In Legacy, it seems like it's better to create all Details as
Sources instead so if I have to make a minor change it will update all the
records attached to it. I can also see who is attached to what record
without having to go through hundreds of names.

I hope this makes sense because it's hard to explain.
