Elizabeth, OK, You created an RTF file using Legacy Descendant Narrative Report, so this will still be in Legacy and the settings will still be the same, provided that you have not changed them since you produced your "base rtf", so you should be able to recover up to that stage at least. You imply that you had already made many additions/changes to this file, if so what software did you use in order to do that, did it auto-backup anywhere and can you go back to the last version by using it? It may just be stored in a temp file, although I must admit that I am clutching at straws a bit here!!
Which Windows operating system are you using? Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ From: E. I had created an .rtf file using the Legacy Descendant Narrative report. It was all the descendants from my earliest ancestor up to those who are living. It was good enough for me to use as a base. I made it an .rtf file so that I could add commentary to it such as obituaries, family stories, histories of how the counties were formed, my own thoughts/questions, etc. It was pretty much finished for the most part but I still wanted to add in the families of some of the spouses, as I had indicated in my other email. You suggested trying the tagging so I did. But no matter which tagging option I chose (everybody, family, entire family line), the report came out looking the same. I could not see any differences. The reports all had the same people in them. I tried all sorts of tagging variations and could never get the ancestors of the spouses to show up. BUT, the dumb thing I did was to save all those tagging reports right over top my .rtf file!!! I other words, when I had tagged and created a report and went to save it, I just clicked the file name of my .rtf file and saved and "replaced/overwrote" my original .rtf file without even thinking about what I was doing! I should have created a new file!! I did that with a bunch of different tagging reports.......alas. Hope I have explained it better. To: [email protected] Date: Friday, December 3, 2010, 5:31 PM Elizabeth, I'm afraid that I cannot really understand what you have done. I appreciate that you will be distressed at the moment, but perhaps you can clarify. 1) Were your narrative comments done In Legacy, if so did you create a back-up when you closed after a day's work? 2) By tagging Report, I assume you mean the list of names who you tagged after finding the descendants and ancestors as suggested. 3) If 1) and 2) are correct they will have (at least) different file extensions, so the latter cannot overwrite the former. 4) If the above are based on inaccurate assumptions, please explain in great detail exactly what and how you set things up and your filing system. 5) Meanwhile don't touch anything which stands a risk of making things worse!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST DID!!!!! I think I'm going to sit here and cry!!!!! I have been working for WEEKS on writing the narrative comments to insert in the report I want to do (mentioned below). But today, while I was trying out the tagging, I saved the tagging report to that file......which wiped out everything I had done. I can't believe it. I can't believe I did something so DUMB!!!! I was working so hard to have this done to give to my family for Christmas. They are all so excited about our family tree. I give up (for now anyway). To: wlmailhtml:/mc/[email protected] Date: Friday, December 3, 2010, 11:56 AM Elizabeth, I would look at Advanced Tagging to do this, which I think is available in the standard version - let us know if you have a problem. First tag the descendants of you oldest ancestors(s), then go to the spouses whose ancestors you wish to include, and using Advanced Tagging, tag the ancestors of that person with the same tag. Then select only to print the tagged people. Not having tried this I cannot say where they will appear in the report! I do not know what you mean by messing up the numbering. If you mean the RINs, then they will not change. Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ From: E. I can't find my answer in the help files, so here I am again :-) I want to create a report (and eventually a family web site) that will show the following--- the 'complete' line of descent from my earliest known ancestor of my own line (my surname) and include "some" of the spouses and parents of certain couples in my surname line Hope that makes sense, but here is an example of what I want to do---- Lloyd Emerson ZEIGLER8,21,31,32,33,65,66 (Solomon B. 3, Martin Jr 2, Martin Sr 1) was born April 13, 1886 in Perry County, Pennsylvania,8,21,32,65 was baptized _____/_____/_____ in __________, __________, __________, died October 27, 1918 in Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania8,32,65 at age 32, and was buried November 02, 1918 in Newport Cemetery, Newport, Perry County, Pennsylvania.8,32,65 The cause of his death was influenza-pnuemonia.8,32,65 Another name for Lloyd was Loyd .8,21 Lloyd married Zella May CRIMMEL,8,29,32,34,41,62,65,67,68 daughter of John R. CRIMMEL and Laura Luella ERNEST, in _____/_____/1914 in Mifflintown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania.8,32,34,65 Marriage status: death of one spouse October 27, 1918. Zella was born Monday, March 21, 1892 in Mifflin, Juniata County, Pennsylvania,8,29,32,65,67,68 was baptized _____/_____/_____ in __________, __________, __________, died Tuesday, June 07, 1982 in Masonic Home, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,8,32,65,68 and was buried in June/_____/1982 in Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.8,32,65 at this point in the report I want to insert Zella Crimmel and Laura Ernest's direct family lines, then I want to go back to my own Zeigler line after that. How can I do that at various points in my report? I don't want to do it for every couple though, just certain ones. How messed up would the numbering of each person be and is there a way to make it right?
