   I, however just found it easier to locate the one I wanted to change
    in the master list.

   I guess whatever works best/you're more comfortable with.

I have made a surname change directly from the family view, using Search and
Replace, Surname, Find whole word only, Match case, Exact.  I changed Brown
to von Brown in the Sample database (66 changes) then changed them all back
again, and it worked with no trouble. (version 7.4.0.45)

   Should be View> Master Lists> Surname, you can modify spelling and
puncuation
    from there.

Ah! But are you searching in the right place? If this is a Surname, why
won't a quick edit of the Surnames table work?
