Use #1. When it says 'link' to someone, it means that it is the same individual. Sometimes you'll have Tom Tripcony and you do want it to 'link' to Thomas Tripcony. Even if the name is exactly the same, LFS will not link two people without you telling it to do it. I haven't tried this the last couple of days but I'm happy it is like this now. As you know, there can be so many name variations and sometime LFS wasn't giving the option to link to the person that I wanted it to. It was only giving the option to link to the 'most likely' person to match mine. Once you have played with it a little, you will love this. Make frequent backups though, more than usual; that would be my recommendation. Because there is no 'undo' button when you are working on this. You'll have to manually correct any mistakes you make.
