Won't disabling the display of the colour patches from the View tab of the
Customise Options screen do what you want?

Thanks Mike for this suggestion, I have not try this method, I just started
all over again.
I belong to a Legacy user group that meets on the second Tuesday of each
month and there were a number of those folks who also had this problem.
 I will take your suggestion along to the next meeting and see what happens.
I have also suggested to the convenor that this might make an interesting
subject for the next meeting.
