Given that the OP said she wasn't a computer expert makes me wonder why she'd want to do this also, but if the reason is solely to perform queries or create custom reports beyond the interface's capability, then it would be best to open the file and then make a copy from which to work.
Certainly there are people who can manipulate the data directly (think Dennis Kowallek and his LTools), but they're pretty knowledgable.
