Have you added these people as sons & daughters of their parents, or parents of their children? It sounds like you might have added unattached new individuals instead. If this is the case, link them together. When you add someone who is a child or parent of another person already in your tree, you don't *have* to accept the surname placed in the Individual's Information - you can change it to something else.
