*Select "Do not change what I enter" in your customizations. Be careful, though, it really does just that. Smith could be entgered as Smtih, and Legacy will accept it. You would need to be more deligent, but this is the option I prefer. It allows me enter names such as "DeCollings," "MacKemberton," etc.
