If you have an SSDI record, I'd add him/her. If not, I'd presume they were living. And I'd be more excited to think that they were possibly living and would do everything I could to try to locate that person and interview him/her!
Just my two cents from someone who has had very private grandparents and had to develop my research only from records; personal information from a living relation, no matter how distant, is a godsend. You never know what they have heard about the family or what they might have inherited thru shared ancestors. Good luck! Ancestry is a great place to hook up with people sharing your ancestry!
