I doubt you are doing anything incorrectly – unfortunately it is a facet of
Legacy. You are right in that linking the children to your cousin’s current
marriage is the only way they will show on reports (this is because they are
not blood descendants, but I like to use Legacy to record family history, not
pure genealogy) BUT they will be out of order as you have seen. However, at
least Legacy gives us the option of showing (in reports too) the status of the
children so there is no confusion. And yes, they WILL show as THEIR children,
but if you have selected to show Child Status (NOTE: Child Status, not
Relationship to Parents) this will be visible. (If you like you can create
your own Child Status such as Step-child of Joe BLOGGS, or even be more
specific and put Step-son – or daughter – of ….) If you also show ½ siblings
they will show up twice. In my case I prefer not to show ½ siblings, leaving
the child status labels to clear up any misunderstanding. Unfortunately what
we need is for the show ½ siblings setting (which doesn’t only show true blood
½ siblings, but any children of both partners) to be reflected, and printed, in
reports. That would remove the need to link the children to both marriages.
If you link the children to your cousin’s current marriage you should be able
to order them as you would a list of natural children. My step-children are
older than my own daughter, and I have them in the correct order on the Family
View, and they print in the correct order It is only when you show ½ kids that
they will be out of order.

Cheers

Subject: [LegacyUG] Step-children

HELP!! I have been using Legacy for several years and REALLY like it but I
have one thing that I have not figured out. I am not sure of how to handle
step-children correctly.

My cousin has 2 children of her own (by 2 different husbands) and 3
step-children that belong to her third husband. When I am looking at the
Family screen, all of her children show up with their fathers listed in
prefaces but none of the step-children. If I click on her third husband, his
children show up with their mother's name in prefaces. I thought the way to
fix this was to set his childrens' relationship to her as step, but that did
not get the desired results. (Also when I try to use the blue drop-down arrows
in the relationship field, I get a run time error that shuts Legacy down.
Anyone know why??) After I set his children as her step-children, they show up
as if they are THEIR children. What do I have set incorrectly??

Along the same lines - I use the Book - Descendents - Narrative to print my
family information and this does not include the step-children at all, until I
linked them to their father and my cousin as their parents, but then it shows
them out of birth order (the step-children are older than her children and they
are listed after her children).

PLEASE, PLEASE someone tell me what I am doing incorrectly.

Thanks in advance!!!
