I just encountered a related problem with the Potential Problems Report. I'll come back to that, below.
I'm afraid I don't understand exactly what you are making invisible or how it changes the report outputs (when you elect to show invisible), but I do agree that this family arrangement has always been tricky to represent. For a child that has been adopted by his mother's newer husband, I link that child to 2 sets of parents -- the mother being common to both sets. I assume that's what you are doing. For the pair of parents that are full biological, I make no special settings. For the pair of parents where one is an adoptive or step parent, there are choices to be made in the Children's Settings for that child under those parents. (1) Set the Relationship to father (in this example) as 'step' or 'adopted' and the relationship to mother as 'biological. The effect of this: - Family View: Relationships are NOT shown. (I agree that doing so would be a bit messy on the screen, since 2 relationship need to be shown. Perhap another symbol/icon would be a compromise solution.) - Descendant Chart report: The child shows as a descendant of the adoptive father, but the Relationships are NOT shown. This is a big problem. - Family Group Sheet, Descendant Book report, and Descendant Narrative Book report: Relationship ARE shown. - Individual Report (for the child or for the parent): Relationships ARE shown. (2) Set the 'Child Status' to a custom status that makes sense, such as 'Step-son to father'. (None of the statuses in the default menu would work, since they would appear to apply to both parents equally.) - Family View: The status IS shown. - Descendant Chart report: The child shows as a descendant of the adoptive father, but the Status is NOT shown. This is a big problem. - Family Group Sheet, Descendant Book report, and Descendant Narrative Book report: The Status IS shown. - Individual Report (for the child or for the parent): Status is NOT shown. This is a problem, which could also affect web page that are based on the Individual report view. So, neither option is perfect, and if you choose both options, then some reports show awkwardly redundant information. Now, here is the problem mentioned at the beginning. The adopted child has a birth date that is prior to the date of the second marriage. This would be a typical condition. I consider this a bug that this shows up in the list of potential problems. The software should recognize that Relationship to Father or Relationship to Mother is set to something other than biological, and thus the marriage date is not an issue. (Yes, I know that once it has been reported, you can mark it as not a problem.) The last husband formally adopted the 1st two children. I have them all entered showing invisible since they are all still alive and I have the 1st and 2nd children showing as 1/2 for the third husband. But they show up under both the 1st and 2nd husband as well. I think I remember long ago that Legacy had a real problem trying to handle this correctly. Did they ever figure out a way to show this properly? What I would like to see on reports is a correct listing of the appropriate children under each husband/wife combination but that isn't what I am getting. Husband 1 and wife and the 1 child; husband 2 and wife and the 2 children; husband 3 and wife and all 3 children with the 1st two marked as adopted. Also, when I tried to run a report to see what this mess would look like and even thought I checked to allow all invisible to show on the report, I didn't get anything other then the particular person I was set on. Can anyone tell me (1) how to set up the screens so that only the appropriate children show with that particular husband (2) if all are marked invisible, what do I have to do to get a report using them even if I have ticked the box for show invisible?
