When I scan a document or picture, I do so using the highest possible resolution. I then place the actual document in an album dedicated to that person.
In Legacy, when I link to either a JPG or PDF copy of the scan, I document the strorage location of the actual document. This is usually the name and location of the "album." The original scan in PDF or TIFF format is stored on a set of 6 TB disk disk drives that are automatically backed up every day. My children know how to get into my computer and find the Legacy files, but I have no confidence that the technology in 20, 30 or 40 years will even be able to read our current formats. So for me at least, the paper files are the best way to preserve my research fro future generations. I do everything possible to make sure all documents are acid free and inks, albums, pictures, and all other items are archival.
