thanks very much for the tip which solved my problem. I also deduced from
your hint that I have to run the "Set direct Line as preferred" to get the
new direct ancestors to show up in bold type.

Relationships have to be calculated from time-to-time, they are not
added on the fly.  When you're done adding some people, run "set
relationships" to update those new people.

The relationship calculator is a separate tool whereby you can discover
the relationship between any two people in your tree, if there is any.
