That is an interesting thought & I've just tried it with a queried placename from my tree - and yes, 'Luffield Abbey?' sorts directly after 'Luffield Abbey' in the master List of locations.
I quite like the ? at the front of a placename because it emphasises the uncertainty - but there's mileage in your excellent suggestion.
