Hi Laura, > The HELP file tells you how to set a direct line as preferred. My > friend did this but now has decided she doesn't want any direct line set as > preferred. We cannot figure out how to undo this setting totally.
I don't think you can remove the "preferred" line altogether - there has to be a preferred person in each family, a preferred set of parents, a preferred marriage, etc. By default it's the first one entered in each instance (first child, first marriage...). I've not paid too much attention to the asterisk against the names of children for a long time now - I don't really have much use for it. That's not to say I won't have a use for it at some stage in the future. I find it more useful to set the direct line in bold. I don't have any children, so to have both mine and my partner's direct lines in bold at the same time I've entered a "placeholder" child for us - and made it very clear that this child doesn't actually exist, in case I accidentally include him/her in a report that I send to someone else. I reset the relationships in my file frequently, as I add new people or switch from looking at my side to his side. I would find it too confusing to just set it at this "theoretical child" and have to remember to drop down one generation for the correct relationship to me or my partner. It's very quick to set relationships (other than waiting while the computer does the actual work!).
