Georgia,
this is not only your problem but one of Legacy.
There isn't a possibility to add any character to Legacy except to those you can
see in the
Options -> Customise -> Data Defaults -> Quick Data Entry Ribbon
Like you and many others having ancestors in Europe and they can't use special
letters to write names correctly.
The problem is, that Legacy isn't using the so called UNICODE.
As I don't know how your letter looks like I can't say anything about if it's
possible to use that letter.
Even if Legacy would support UNICODE there is still the problem that the
character you need isn't supported.
Could you send an example of the letter you need as that would be a great help
to help you.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Special Characters
I have been adding a number of family members with Hawaiian names. To give
their correct spelling, I need an occasional letter with an overscore. I have
not found what I need on the Special Character map.
Is there a way to add a needed character to the map?
Thank you,
Georgia Chun
