Thanks for your detailed answer. And it's Washington state... that gave me a chuckle, and a reminder how self-centered we Americans can get. There is at least one in England that is often reasonably correctly referred to as County Durham. Some Irish counties are often prefixed by the word County as well. Not all counties have the suffix "shire" as part of their name (such as Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent, Sussex). However, in 18th century & earlier England some counties (eg; Lincolnshire) were known by the prefix only even in official records such as the census. In 1974 a lot of long established counties underwent a name change to reflect administrative areas. I can't explain it well to you as I migrated in 1971 from England to Western Australia (WA), but it is probably searchable through Google! Correctly stating county, province and state names is very important to people outside the state etc., of the writer & to minimise confusion abbreviations should - in my opinion - NOT be used in communications that go outside the writer's national boundaries. For example, what does RI mean at the end of Ron B's message? Could be very confusing to someone in say India that is not aware of US postal authorities abbreviations. Likewise, I make sure in all of my genealogical emails I will not refer to Western Australia as << WA >> for fear that someone thinks I'm referring to the state in USA whose name escapes me at the moment. There are other places in the world of email other than USA. Peter Holmes Western Australia.
