Have you ever opened an RTF file in a plain text editor? That's the kind
of things you would see if you did.

You are looking at the RTF markup. Legacy inserts these codes into the
.rtf file. If you then open the file in Word as a RICH TEXT document,
Word will use that markup to format the display, but you won't actually
see the raw markup. It's like HTML. HTML markup might be "<b>this is
bold</b>", but what gets displayed is "this is bold" in bold typeface.
