As Dennis Kowallek indicated in his reply, you are seeing the special codes inserted into the rtf file for various purposes. The example you mention is the markup used to tell word to index that name when you create a name index. I am not expert enough in Word to advise you but there should be a way to turn off the display of those markups and show only the resulting text.
